What is Haus Schwarzenberg?
A place of history, culture and art. Haus Schwarzenberg is home to various facilities - artists' studios, an art house cinema, memorials, a bar and galleries. There are also commercial enterprises. This structure is unique for various reasons.
How does it work?
Haus Schwarzenberg is managed by the Schwarzenberg Association, a registered non-profit organization that is responsible for the concept and the provision of a sustainable structure. Since its foundation, the association has operated on a cost-covering and economically independent basis, i.e. it receives no subsidies or other support. The association not only manages and rents out the space, but also promotes mainly young and unknown artists through the neurotitan gallery. With the neurotitan store, Schwarzenberg e.V. is also directly commercially active. The store and gallery are platforms for art and cultural marketing outside the commercial art market. The mixed use of business, independent artists and non-profit institutions realized by the association forms the equivalent of a medium-sized company in its overall scope. Schwarzenberg (house and association) is thus in principle a functioning integrative model for economically effective cultural management.
Where does the name come from?
The name of the house and the association goes back to the town and district of Schwarzenberg in the Ore Mountains. The strange and generally forgotten history of this area is recounted in the novel of the same name by Stefan Heym: Due to a misunderstanding, the Allied troops from the West and East only advanced as far as Schwarzenberg's borders. Schwarzenberg thus remained unoccupied for a considerable period of time. A committee of social democrats, communists and concentration camp survivors drove out the Nazis and organized supplies for the population. The “Free Republic of Schwarzenberg” existed for around 6 weeks until the occupation by Soviet troops.
How long has Haus Schwarzenberg been in existence?
The Schwarzenberg Association was founded in 1995
